"You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” Jack London
Magazines are my number one go to for inspiration. Whether it's for design inspiration or inspiration for that evening's dinner, the first place I turn is to my stack of magazines. Which is why it's
so worrisome to hear what a state the magazine publishing industry is in these
days. Every day seems to bring news of another of my favorite periodicals biting the dust.
Remember Country Home? How about Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion? Each issue of Country Living gets thinner and thinner, never a good sign. Victoria went away for years only to reappear on newsstands, but for how long?
It's not just "lifestyle" mags either. Reader's Digest just filed for bankruptcy for the second time in four years. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, the owners of Time magazine are attempting to work out a deal to sell their group of magazines. The deal may put Time in jeopardy because reportedly the new buyers want the group but they don't want Time. Time! Dark times for the readers of periodicals indeed...
What would I do if all of my favorite magazines went away? Curling up on the couch with a cup of tea on a rare quiet afternoon wouldn't be the same. At the risk of sounding old-fashioned and quaint (once again!), curling up with the latest online version of one of my design 'zines (de-zines?) on my laptop is just not the same. It's the difference between "nooks" and real books. As you probably could guess, I'm a book girl, same as I'm a tried-and-true paper and ink magazine girl!
How about you? Do you prefer the online version or the old school paper and ink version of your favorite magazine?
