You met Madame H last week here at Queen Without a Country. Madame H is doing a terrific job of greeting our guests and I can't wait to see what little trick-or-treaters think of her on Halloween Night!
I decided that the run-of-the-mill chalkboard I'd used to announce Madame H just wasn't up to snuff. Recently, I saw a cute idea for transforming a metal serving tray into a chalkboard and I knew it would be the perfect touch for the All-Powerful, All-Seeing Madame H!
I think it turned out pretty great and was super simple to make. Here's how to make one for yourself:
~What You'll Need~
An old metal serving tray - any size, any shape
(I got mine at a thrift store for just a couple of bucks)
Chalkboard paint
Sponge brushes
Chalk
~What You'll Do~
1. Wash and dry your tray.
2. Using a sponge brush, paint your tray with a thin coat of chalk paint. The scalloped edge of my tray gave me a nice crisp edge but you could use painter's tape to help define the edge and to protect the parts of the tray you don't want painted if you wish.
3. Apply a second coat of paint after allowing the first coat to dry for at least an hour.
4. It may be necessary to apply one or two more coats of paint in order to fully cover the metal of your tray.
5. Once you've achieved full coverage, allow the paint to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before "seasoning" the chalkboard surface of the tray. Seasoning is achieved by rubbing the entire surface with chalk and then erasing it.
6. Now you're ready to write your ghostly message.
Your chalkboard doesn't have to be limited to use during Halloween. Use it for any holiday, occasion or an every day message board (I know what you're thinking...really, Captain Obvious?)
Enjoy your new chalkboard!
Super cute!
